Why your made-to-order Shopify products keep overselling (and how to fix it)

If you sell made-to-order or personalized products on Shopify (engraved jewelry, custom cakes, configurable furniture), you've probably hit this: an order comes in for something you can't actually fulfill, because the materials ran out days ago. The product page never showed "sold out." Shopify happily took the money. Now you're emailing a customer to cancel. Sound familiar?

This isn't a fluke. It's how Shopify treats the data behind custom options.

Why line item properties don't track stock

Most personalization on Shopify is built with line item properties: the "Add your engraving text" box, the "Choose your wood finish" dropdown, the file upload for a photo. They're flexible, they don't multiply your variant count, and they attach the customer's choices straight to the cart line.

But a line item property is just text riding along with the order. Shopify only tracks inventory against variants. A line item property has no variant, so it has no stock count. There's nothing for Shopify to decrement, and nothing to hit zero. The moment your real supply of a finish, a component, or a material runs out, the storefront has no idea. It keeps selling.

So for made-to-order sellers it's the worst of both worlds: you get the flexibility of custom options and the overselling of an untracked product.

The fix is real inventory behind the option

The way out is to give each option real stock that Shopify actually counts. You connect the customer-facing choice to inventory you control, so that:

That's the gap Optionfier fills. You keep building products with custom options the way your customers expect, but each option can carry real inventory: tracked, decremented at checkout, and shown as low-stock or sold-out right on the product page. Model the product as a bundle of components or keep using line item properties. Either way, the stock behind every choice stays honest.

No more "sold out" surprises after the sale. No more cancellation emails.
